Emergency Preparedness and Response

Emergency preparedness and response

Emergency preparedness and response are plans and actions to stay safe when something unexpected, like a natural disaster, happens.

Emergency Preparedness means getting ready before any problem occurs. This can include:

  • Making a list of emergency phone numbers
  • Packing an emergency kit with food, water, a torch, and first aid supplies
  • Knowing the quickest, safest way out of your home or building
  • Practicing what to do if an emergency happens

Emergency Response means the actions we take right when an emergency happens. These might be:

  • Calling for help
  • Moving to a safe place
  • Using the first aid kit if someone is hurt
  • Following the plan we made earlier to stay calm and safe

Together, preparedness and response help us manage emergencies better and protect lives.

At a glance…

  • Over 4 million affected in Kenya as per statistics shared by N.D.M.A (National Disaster Management Authority).
  • Children remain the biggest victims of the drought threat. 1.4 million children in Kenya are in need of humanitarian assistance (NDMA, April 2022)
  • Conducted field assessments through the support of Meru N.D.M.A to get a deeper understanding of the situation including proposed interventions by the community (visits to sampled locations in Meru & Isiolo, interviews and photos)
  • A total of 35,052 households with a population of 177,137 are in urgent need of food support
  • 10,749 children under 5yrs are experiencing acute food shortage.
  • Sources of livelihoods range from agriculture, agro-pastoral to pure pastoral (casual labour as an indirect source of livelihood from the areas mentioned)
  • Effects include failed crops, livestock deaths, learning disruption, community migration, child malnutrition, inter-community conflicts, SGBV, loss of casual jobs and water-borne related diseases.

Working with communities

Each child and each family is part of a community. Our allies include community-based organisations, local authorities and governments. Together we build resilience in vulnerable families.
