SOS Children's Village Mombasa
Mombasa is a lively port-town and tourist centre with around 1,208,333 as per the 2019 census inhabitants. Construction works for the SOS Children's Village Mombasa were completed in 1979. In the same year, the first children and SOS mothers moved in. It was opened by the former President of Kenya, His Excellency Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, in 1995.
SOS Children's Village in Mombasa was developed on the Northern shore of the Bay of Mombasa, 500 metres from the coast. It consists of fifteen family houses, a village director's house, staff flats, an ICT resource centre, a house for the SOS aunts and an administrative and service unit.
Each family house comprises a small garden in which fruits and vegetables are cultivated. The kindergarten was opened in 1979 and consisted of four group rooms, a playground, and several secondary rooms. Children from the SOS Children's Village in Mombasa and the local neighbourhood attend the kindergarten.
